Geraniums Red and Yellow

Geraniums
8" x 8" x 1.5" Oil on wood cradled panel

A few geraniums from my container garden with a little yellow dahlia thrown in for good measure.

I enjoy painting geraniums.  I think I do better by them as paintings than in real life.  I tried a less structured approach with these this time.  Rather than starting out with a detailed drawing, I thought I'd "wing it" and just pencil it in roughly and let my eye do the measuring.  A lot more fun this way.

A Trio of Geraniums

A Trio of Geraniums
12" x 24"
Oil and Collage on Wood Panel

I've always wanted to pair collage with oils as I mentioned in one of my previous posts.  I'm excited to do more like this.  Maybe it's finding unexpected patterns and textures peeking through here and there.

White Geraniums in Silver

8" x 10"
oil on wood panel

Remember my previous post about painting geraniums?  Well I may have been a little premature.
Painting white geraniums without the best lighting conditions did present more of a challenge.  I do enjoy painting white flowers because of the nuanced colours that appear when painting anything white.  But my photographic skills were not up to par and it was rather difficult to ad lib colour so although I'm satisfied, I'm not thrilled.

Geraniums

Who would've thought geraniums with their little florets would be so appealing to paint?  The clusters that make up one flower would seem daunting.  But each little distinctive flower that make up the whole are so simple that I've returned to painting these several times over.  This time I wanted to try a little collage for the background.  This one is not finished yet but I think I will try a few more like this and perhaps add my drawing first so I can place the papers more strategically.

November Geraniums

November Geraniums
10" x 10" oil on wood panel 3/4" deep
$240.00

They've come inside for the winter.  I'm not that good with geraniums indoors but they have carried
on their momentum in my paintings.

I was delayed in finishing this one because I searched for a vivid pink (something like Opera which is almost fluorescent).  Not finding any, I used Permanent Rose and lightened it with Gamblin's Radiant Magenta.  A warmer pink than I was aiming for but decided to go ahead and finish this one.  I am happiest with the cluster of petals on the right.  I'm still enjoying (because it's new to me) painting
silver objects.

Geraniums in Silver with Apple II

6" x 6" x 1.5"

This was a spur of the moment painting using the paint left over from painting the larger version.  (see previous post)  I felt I needed to paint the previous image larger than the usual 6x6 because of the multi petalled geranium but perhaps because I was now familiar with the approach I decided to try the smaller version.  Sometimes simpler is better?
